My Thoughts On Qik "Lite"
I probably should have known better than to get my hopes up when I read @erionhouston's tweet that Qik was available in the iTunes App store. But I got a little excited anyway. It was a short-lived excitement.
As I read the post, it was clear that this app would only work on WiFi and would not do what Qik is famous for... live streaming right from your phone. The WiFi limitation would not be an issue if this was a full version of the app. Streaming has never worked great on the 3g wireless network anyway. But limiting the ability to upload to WiFi is the second of the deal killers.
The first of the deal killers is the absence of live streaming. @jackie_danicki was quick to respond to my initial tweets, so I applaud Qik for having someone like her around, but live streaming is what Qik is about. Being able to distribute to blogs, tiwtter, youtube, facebook... I can do that right here on Posterous. (Note: it did not autotweet after upload, even though that is what I had it set to do.)
And the third deal killer for me is that when I recorded from inside the Qik app, it did not save the video to my camera roll. (See image 4 above.) So, I know now that I shouldn't shoot anything I want to keep for myself. But that was unexpected, since the other option for uploading was choosing from the camera roll. I realize the live stream jailbreak version doesn't either, but I expect that with live streaming.
So, I doubt I'll be using this again until Apple/AT&T change their SDK and allow Qik to live stream without jailbreaking.
Dang. I was so excited.
